Not Fully Precise But Still Worth Reading I was a little worried at first that this was going to be a hokey book - when I got to the 2nd paragraph - "From the beginning of civilization man has fought..." but this was actually enjoyable reading. Unfortunately there are small errors throughout the book - little things - like Garber says that in the first Ali Frazier fight that Frazier knocked Ali to his knees. That didn't happen - he knocked Ali flat on his back. Another example - Garber refers to Emanuel Steward as Manuel Steward - the wrong name. Other than that the book is enjoyable - it gives you a quick look and synopsis of some of boxing's greatest legends. I liked the choice of boxers Garber chose to discuss - in particular Teofilio Stevenson - the Cuban Olympic Heavywieght - his story is very interesting and I felt that it was truly a brave and bold choice to include him in this book - which is why this book gets 4 stars as opposed to 3 - and simply put I was very impressed to find such a gutsy choice in this book. The book keeps pretty much on the surface of each chosen topic and is a good book for the pre-teen to teen interested in boxing or anyone interested in the history of boxing. I'm glad I own it.
The History of Boxing Colorfully Made For Teenagers
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 24 years ago
This book is a fun and easy read and if you have teenagers or youngsters interested in boxing, this book is a must. Greg Garber has written a technically accurate boxing exposition without getting boring or to technical. The biographies are short, yet informative, and may give the reader a spark to get more materials on certain boxing hereos. Most of boxing top legends are here; Ali, Marciano, Louis and Dempsey. There is also a section on some of the greatest fights in history. This is the one flaw because it is too small and some other great fights are not there for the reading. The photographs are colorful and the book is outlined wonderfully. As an adult and boxing fan, I found this book to be a fun time even though I was already familiar with most of the fighters. This book is a enjoyable read and I think young people will have a great time reading about the boxers who pioneered the sport before them.
