Book Overview

Mademoiselle Fifi is a collection of short stories by the French author, Henri Rene Guy de Maupassant. The book features eight stories, all set in France during the late 19th century. The title story, Mademoiselle Fifi, is a tale of a group of German soldiers who take over a French village during the Franco-Prussian War. The soldiers, led by a cruel and sadistic officer named Fifi, terrorize the villagers and force them to participate in a decadent and depraved party. The other stories in the book explore themes of love, betrayal, and the human condition. Some of the stories are dark and disturbing, while others are more lighthearted and humorous. De Maupassant's writing is known for its realism and vivid descriptions, and this book is no exception. Mademoiselle Fifi is a classic work of French literature and a must-read for anyone interested in the genre. The girls did not understand his witticisms, and their intelligence did not seem to be awakened until he sputtered obscene words, rough expressions, crippled by his accent. Then all in a chorus began to laugh as if they were demented, falling on the laps of their neighbors, repeating the words which the Baron disfigured purposely in order to make them say filthy things. They vomited at will plenty of them, intoxicated after drinking from the first bottles of wine; and relapsing into their real selves, opening the gates to their habits, they kissed mustaches on their right and those on their left, pinched arms, uttered furious screams, drank out of all the glasses, sang French couplets and bits of German songs they had learned in their daily intercourse with the enemy. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Mademoiselle Fifi

Mademoiselle Fifi demonstrates the mastery that Guy de Maupassant exerts over the short story structure. Mademoiselle Fifi is at once brilliant, suggestive, and finally horrifying. A brief note on plot-- it is a fictional account of German occupation during the Franco-Prussian War. If tales such as Mademoiselle Fifi ever become substantiated by real-life accouts, you'll likely be shocked by German war crimes that well predated the Second World War...
