Lovely evocation of Puig's affinity/facination with noir and Hollywood from the 30's and 40's. The book is a kind of mystery as well as a depiction of class in Argentina from the 40's to the 60's. A lot is asked of the reader. Because the novel unfolds through journal and diary entries, letters, police and hospital reports, church confessions, etc, the reader must synthesize the material as well as deciding where the truth lies amongst the various perspectives. For me, as a non-native speaker of Spanish, the book was somewhat challenging to read because of the ambiguities inherent to the style as well as some of the vocabulary but well worth it. Beautiful depictions of characters as well as reflections on human motivation. An extremely satisfying and touching work.
Another well crafted novel from Puig

Manuel Puig's Unrecognized Masterpiece

The tale of "Heartbreak Tango" is a captivating web spun out of the spider-threads of the inhabitants' lives in a small Argentinian town. Touching, humerous, and filled with the sadness of human emotional attachments, Puig has created a magnificent look into the life of a veritable "Don Juan." An extremely good read!
