PRINT MUSIC The Book of Preludes: 1-15 for Piano is a collection of original, solo-piano music by composer, author, educator and performing artist, Barry Michael Wehrli. The first prelude was composed shortly after the new millennium with the 15th and final prelude completed on October 8, 2013. The term "Neo-Romantic" best describes these works as they resemble the short, evocative character pieces of Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy, but possess elements of later styles such as new-age, jazz, avant-garde and impressionism. Though this publication is technically an urtext, it should serve only as guide toward one's own personal expression of the music. Pedaling, dynamics, articulation and even tempo are considerations of the performer, the instrument being played, and acoustical environment. The composer only warns against excessive speed. Be advised that longer note values can represent stress rather than duration. The damper-pedal notation used throughout this collection implies full, legato pedaling and sostenuto pedal markings are provided where appropriate. Though soft- and half-pedaling notations have been omitted, the performer may use them judiciously for their timbral and dynamic effects. Rehearsal or bar numbers are given at the beginning of each system. Fingering is also included, though only suggested.Comments and questions are welcomed by the composer. He can be reached at the Wehrli Publications website: wehrlipubs.com. Autographed CDs are available at wehrlipubs.com/shop/book-of-preludes-cd (scan back-cover QR code), where you can hear excerpts and find additional reviews.
