Country Voice

The publisher Iris Press is known for the quality of their list, and this book is no exception. Fifteen stories, quietly told, well written, good enough that the reader is torn between reading on and putting the book down between stories to savor each. Ordinary folks, but not--ordinary folks with an extraordinary turning, and a storyteller voice that entices, leads the reader forward.'Dancing on Graves' and "Long Hair' certainly made me pause.A man, resigned to his life with a caring but unaffectionate wife, drawn by a much younger woman whose ankle is circled by a woven band of red clover, drawn to the edge of forgetting himself even as she is drawn to confide her darkest secret to him, but he pulls back from the edge--and she does not, and forever he'll wonder at his choice. A woman in her thirties, hair not cut since her youth, sitting in a car outside a beauty salon--a married man cherished her once, but when caught abandoned her, and still she held that memory of being loved once. Worth reading. Well worth reading, if you enjoy short fiction.

Blue Ridge Shadows by Julia Nunnally Duncan

Blue Ridge Shadows is the first collection of fictional stories that I could not put down until I finished the entire book. Her character discriptions had me wondering if I knew these folks or if just maybe, these were my relatives. All in her collection held my attention and my imagination. Davis Lee, Chanson Triste, and Dancing on Graves were three favorites. The Jacket, continues to haunt me and is by far my favorite. I attended a reading by Duncan and asked her to write a sequel with a different ending. Something touched a nerve in me. Maybe I saw too much of myelf in some aspects in Mason, maybe I knew a Mason. A wonderful book for almost any age level. I highly recomend anyone reading this. We want more, Julia.
