Black Worker in the Deep South is part memoir and part histories of the black labor and freedom struggles in the South (particularly in Alabama) through about the middle of the 20th century. The problem is that while the two parts are integrated, they're not particularly well harmonized--that is, smooth transitions are rare, and the reader may be left wondering how certain passages relate to one another. This shakiness is due mainly to the facts that Mr. Hudson was not a writer by profession, and in fact was only semiliterate (the fairly excellent prose in his book is the work of his editors, who basically transliterated his manuscript). All that said, Black Worker in the Deep South is absolutely worth reading. Mr. Hudson was a hero of the working class, and his story is fascinating and inspiring and moving (even if, again, it is not presented in as well-organized a fashion as it might have been). (I should note that historian Nell Irvin Painter helped Mr. Hudson to pen a second autobiography, The Narrative of Hosea Hudson: The Life and Times of a Black Radical. It's from Prof. Painter's introduction to that volume that I learned about the cosmetic work done on Black Worker in the Deep South to prepare it for publication. I have not, however, read the rest of her collaboration with Mr. Hudson, so I can't speak to its merits. I do know that it covers much more of Mr. Hudson's life than Black Worker in the Deep South, though.)

A Great historical narrative

This book tells the amazing story of black workers organizing during the depression to fight both rascism and capitalism. Hosea Hudson is a hero.
