VIETNAM WAR: FIGHTING NEAR THE BORDER AND IN LAOS AND CAMBODIA

HATCHET; BLACK MISSION is book 1 of a trilogy from the year 1992 written by Michael Kasner under the house name 'Knox Gordon'. Before dying in 2008, Mr. Kasner had written 3 dozen or so books for the GOLD EAGLE line of books. Since Mr. Kasner was a veteran serving two tours in Vietnam his writings are well based in experience and contain details of interest. This HATCHET series concerns Green Beret Mike Forces acting as Hatchet forces, sometimes working under the authority of SOG. Readers of Vietnam will find these books much to their interest. This book details a few weeks in the life of newly established fire base close to the Ho Chi Minh Trail, isolated and situated at a point where the NVA passes into Vietnam. They represent a true thorn in the side of North Vietnam and will of due course and action be subjected to attempts by the NVA to completely wipe them out. By their nature both Mike Force and Hatchet teams are small groups of Green Beret units composed of less than half dozen men. In the case of Camp A-410, in the area of Pleiku, additional fighting men are made up of Chinese Nung fighters. This story highlights both the political and "CIA superspook" elements leading to men being placed into combat areas where they are outnumbered and where life expectancy is next to nil. Another action/adventure book of the Vietnam War from GOLD EAGLE book, having nearly as much fact as fiction within the story. As the advertising blurb states "When you fly with GOLD EAGLE, you'll soar to new heights of adventure." The only offsetting critique I can state is a glossary of terms, such as those offered in the VIETNAM; GROUND ZERO books, would have been a help as well for the HATCHET series of books. Still this is a fine series most people with military interest of the Vietnam era will enjoy. Semper Fi.
