If you are from Ireland, this is a great read. If you are from Cork city, it may be the best book to come out since...I don't know what! Liam O'Murchu's first-hand accounts and knowledge of the comings and goings of Corkonians from the thirties to the present is priceless. The story he tells is of a family with as bleek a future as Frank McCourt's pathetically dreary Limerick family with one exception; the hero in this story is the love which pervades the O'Murchu household. Told from this perspective, it allows the reader to share many laughs with Liam and his family. The friends of the O'Murchu household went on to become very successful in later years, no doubt owing to the love and encouragement that was given to these kids. Without this love and encouragement, the future of these young men and women would have looked as bleak as the smoke bellowing out the factory chimneys.I had a hard time putting this book down.
