Historical Recollections

This book is a collection of 30 women and 3 men's recollections of their experiences in the birth process of their children. The stories cover a range of years, methods and emotions. Included are stories of normal deliveries with and without medical intervention, stillbirths, home births, Cesarean births, a birth in which the baby was given up for adoption, and births with and without complications. The accounts are arranged in chronological order from 1915 to the present. This added dimension of history helps give some understanding to past generational attitudes toward birth and the medical profession. Personal stories of birth, while an ageless experience for women, are always fresh and unique because each woman and child is different. (This review was previously published in "Daughters of Sarah" May/Jun 1985.)
