When Hazel Johnson and Mari McCray met at church bingo in 1963, it was love at first sight. Forced apart by their families and society, Hazel and Mari both married young men and had families. Decades later, now in their mid-'60s, Hazel and Mari reunite again at a church bingo hall. Realizing their love for each other is still alive, what these grandmothers do next takes absolute strength and courage.

This Jackpot Edition contains over SIXTY PAGES of bonus material, including the talents of MARGUERITE BENNETT (Batwoman) and newcomer BEVERLY JOHNSON, SHAWN PRYOR (Cash and Carrie) and PAULINA GANUCHEAU (Zodiac Starforce), award-winning historical romance author ALYSSA COLE's comics writing debut with SHAE BEAGLE (MOONSTRUCK), GAIL SIMONE (CROSSWIND) and MARGAUX SALTEL (Superfreaks), and AMANDA DEIBERT (Wonder Woman '77) and CAT STAGGS (CROSSWIND), with illustrations from MEGAN HUTCHINSON (ROCKSTARS) and ARIELA KRISTANTINA (InSeXts). Plus a sneak peek of BINGO LOVE, VOL. 2: DEAR DIARY, with an afterword from GABBY RIVERA (America).

I’ve literally never had a book make me bawl my eyes out like this before (spoilers)

So, I know it’s a joke in queer spaces that people lose their minds over ‘old man yaoi’ or ‘old women yuri’. I enjoy the nuances those kinds of memes create. Having a story like this really just shows that queer and LGBTQIA+ people are just regular people in love. The FIRST page already had so much depth to its story. Hazel straight up admits that she had to hide who she fell in love with because it was the 60s and she’s BLACK. I also enjoy that Hazel is of a darker skin tone than the other black people in the school. I feel like that doesn’t happen very often. I just love to see more representation. Hazel gets caught kissing Mari, so Mari is sent away. Hazel is forced to marry a man. She ends up loving him, but not in the same way or as strongly as with Mari. They have three kids. She names her daughter Marian after Mari. This just absolutely BROKE my heart. And a few panels below that, she says, “. . . Creating clothes was my only escape. I dreamed that I was with Mari and she was my model. I created beautiful pieces for Mari to wear on our dates. She looked gorgeous as always.” This absolutely broke me. There are so many people who have to live this reality right now. It was obviously way worse back in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, but it’s deplorable that it's still someone’s world. Another thing, breastfeeding isn’t treated like it's some weird thing and I love that too. PLEASE read this book. It’s so emotional and realistic that it hurts.

8 Perfectly Cool Graphic Novels for Fall
Published by Eileen Gonzalez • October 05, 2022

Comics are uniquely suited to fall reading: they make it easy to visualize locations and color palettes that are uniquely autumnal. Some of these graphic novels explicitly take place in the fall, while others deal with fall-like themes, such as change or growing older. Either way, you're sure to enjoy them as you sip your hot beverage of choice, give your pet a little pat, and wait with patience or with dread as winter slips ever nearer.
