The authors emphasize that our reading of the Bible, reading of anything really, is highly influenced by our own experiences. Two people could read that same passages and come away with different thoughts and feelings. The authors encourage us to identify who we are as readers first then see the text for what it really is. They encourage self-interpretation rather than immediately running to see what the "experts" have to say on the topic.
