A compact yet insightful look toward change

Beyond the Stable State is a highly sophisticated book in which a great deal of history, ideas, knowledge and wisdom have been compressed to give the reader a clear view of Technological Change during the last 200 years. How today Western civilization has lost its stable state when it confronts rapidly accelerating change. Schon intoduces fantastic concepts such as Dynamic Conservatism. Dynamic Coservatism is the response that established institutions normally show to the treat of change-fighting to remain the same. By comparing Models of Learning as well as investigating rational and pragmatic models of knowing Schon argues that the society as whole has to learn about new ways of learning. Existential models of acting is what Schon suggests for the loss of stable state: we must act before we know, in order to Learn. In other words, we know more than we can say. To sum up, Schon's ideas is of great utility to all students of technology, specially those who are to see whether modernity has come to its maturity. Once again Schon proves his mastery in combining knowledge and feeling to develop meta-statements that capture the very depth of our thought and emotion.
