To Poole, the truth about God and life is deeper, higher and wider than all our tries at the truth can confess. When it comes to the gospel of God, it is as Tennyson penned, "Our little sytems have their day.....They are but broken lights of Thee And Thou , O Lord, art more than they." Poole gives penetrating examples of growing in grace, stressing how hard it is to embrace change. Poole asks questions we all ask privately, and gives sensible answers, or no answers---where there are none. I was not expecting to like this book. After all he is a Baptist minister. But this is ecumenical writing. I'll be interested to know if Poole is still in the Baptist Church, since he feels that women are also called to do important work in the church.
