Literature Based Unit Studies

The unit study method needs to be your preference for you to appreciate this curriculum as your core homeschool curriculum. It is not my style, however, I have used this book as a curriculum for a extra-curricular book club that we participate in. It has worked beautifully and perfectly for that. For each of the four chapter books covered in this volume there are tons of activities from which to choose. Each book is sectioned by chapters, with approximately 5 to 10 possible activites per chapter. One should not feel obligated to do all activities listed. Activites are organized within each chapter by discipline, e.g. fine arts, science, etc. At the start of each chapters activities is a parent summary of the book chapter. In case it is needed, the list of books this volume covers is: The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Warner Chandler Thomas Edison- Young Inventor by Sue Guthridge Homer Price by Robert McCloskey Betsey Ross-Designer of Our Flag by Ann Weil Age wise, the Beyond Five in a Row volumes are for the child that has progressed to reading chapter books on his/her own.

Awesome literature based unit study!

We have had so much fun with this! I have two types of learners that I use it with. My dd is an investigation nut! She looks up everything and records it in her many notebooks. This curriculum fits her like a glove! I also use it with my ds who has some language processing problems and has to be pushed to read anything or to try something new/learn something new. It fits him like a glove! How?! because the Beyond Five in a Row book has so much good information in it that I can read what's in it and decide what I want my children to investigate more deeply. Usually, my daughter looks up and reads books about 3 things compared to my son's one thing, but they both get the practice that they need. This unit study includes History, geography, science, Language Arts, discussion, research, vocabulary words, internet connections, art....and so much more. It foster's a love for learning!
