A Historical Tale

Between Two Shores by Jocelyn Green is a stand-alone novel. Set during the time of the French and Indian War. Catherine Duval is the daughter of a Mohawk mother and French father. She has always been a part of both worlds, now she is forced to take sides in a war where she would rather be a neutral. Samuel Crane, a British prisoner and her ex-fiancé, claims to have information that will end the war. When he asks Catherine to help him escape, she must decide were her loyalties lie. I really enjoyed learning more about the history of the Seven Years’ War. The interaction of Catherine and her siblings, and the growth of character that they all showed was amazing to watch. One scene at the river bordered on improper but other than that the book was great. I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

rich in detail; historical fiction

I received an advance reading copy of the book “Between Two Shores” by Jocelyn Green for my honest opinion of the book. Between Two Shores is a well-researched and well written historical novel. It is set in the mid 1700’s in the Montreal/Quebec area of Canada during the Seven Years’ War. It is one woman’s story of living and surviving in between two worlds. She was born to a Mohawk mother and a French father. While she chooses to live in the French world with her father, she also mingles with her siblings on the reservation and runs a trading post that trades between the Mohawk, French and English. This book was full of historical detail and place descriptions. I felt that I could see the area as she was describing it. I admit it took me a while to get into it, but once I did, I enjoyed it. Be aware it is not a romance book. For some that will be good news, for others maybe not. I personally like a bit of romance in my books, so it was a little sad for me. I did like enjoy the main character, Catherine. She is a strong woman who can hold her own against anything that comes her way, but also does show some vulnerability when it comes to her family. I recommend this book to those who really like good historical details. Jocelyn really does her homework to ensure accuracy.

Engaging, riveting historical page-turner

Compelling characters, engaging plotline, and beautifully captured setting. I was captivated by the story, the history, the characters throughout. Highly, highly recommended.

Wonderful book

Jocelyn Green's book, "Between Two Shores" is a wonderful book. Full of adventure, it pulls at your emotions. Joy, sadness and forgiveness are some of those emotions. Catherine has to decide if she should risk her heart and her life by helping her former fiance. But when Samuel's life is put in danger and he has to get a message to his commander she decides to help him and be his guide through enemy territory. There they make discoveries, become involved in much danger and risk for her and her family. I enjoyed this book and look forward to many more books by Jocelyn Green. I received this book from Bethany House and all opinions are my own.

New Historical Fiction Favorite: A History Lesson in Prose

It never ceases to amaze me at the amount of detail Jocelyn Green tucks into her novels. I tend to savor each one. Did you know Green even knows when words came into use? Sometimes, if her novel is set before a certain time, she cannot use a word because it wouldn't be authentic! Reading her novels is like receiving an enjoyable history lesson. (I'm from the States, and I enjoyed learning more about a part of Canada's history in this novel.) Specific to "Between Two Shores:" First things first, this is NOT a historical romance like her other two novels. Green has branched out to try her hand at a historical fiction, and I loved it all the same! But, please, y'all don't read this book expecting a romance! However, if you do want another novel with a strong leading lady, "Between Two Shores" is your next read. The main character, Catherine Stands-Apart Duval, runs her own business, cares for a father and a ward, and shares love for her family. If you guessed there are several themes threaded throughout involving choosing a side and conflicts, you are correct (not a spoiler, it's the title for Pete's sake!). The novel also mostly flows in a linear fashion, but returns to parts of the past to gives us some background on characters, which I enjoyed the variety. Thank you to Bethany House Publishers for providing me with a copy! All opinions are my own. I cannot wait to see what Green writes for us next!

Extraordinary historical fiction

Wow, I really enjoyed this book. Having read a couple other stories from this author I knew I was in for a treat and I was not disappointed. Between Two Shores by Jocelyn Green is a wonderful historical romance. Green does an extraordinary job with the historical detail in this story about the French and Indian war as we Americans call the Seven Years War that involved a number of countries and has been said to be the first world war. Famine, traveling on the St Lawrence River in the midst of war, the ins and outs of a trading post--so much detail that keeps the reader's interest high. Green is a master at beautiful imagery that draws one into the scenes and feelings of the characters. "The stars seemed almost low enough to touch, diamond chips scattered against night's mantle." "a comfort that was a pouring of water into places of her heart that had been dust-dry for years." The characters are vivid and realistic. Catherine and Samuel's story rings true with wartime hardships, broken dreams, and broken families. Her wounds were deep and Catherine had gone numb and given up hope that Samuel would return. When he did could she bear the wounds being opened again? She had shaped Samuel into the man he had become and he had given her hope and love and confidence when she needed it most. Could he ask her to help him when he knew he could break her heart again? Throughout Catherine and Samuel's story there is another story of three women of different heritages and yet sisters through choice and commitment. I loved Bright Star's character--so strong even as grief upon grief is heaped on her heart. Between Two Shores is a complex and multifaceted story that reminds readers that God is in the business of forgiveness, redemption and restoration, and of an eternal love that is not given in trade for anything--it just is. I received a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.
