The Best Collection

I think this is the best collection of Jewett's short stories available. I enjoy "Country of the Pointed Firs" but her shorter works are more appealing to those of who like faster conclusions and more plot. Jewett's characterizations are spellbinding and sometimes tongue-in-cheek in her short stories. I got the book as a gift after enjoying it myself. It's rich in history and the Maine of yesterday...but like most great literature, has a timelesness. The collection will stay in my bookshelf indefinetely while others are taken to sales or thrift shops. It's one to be browsed again and again.
