Best Friends: Fisher Price Ready Reader Storybook (Third Grade, Book 9)

ISBN 0766611930 - Fisher-Price turns out to be a surprisingly good match with kids' books. Even this sorta girly-looking book is better than I expected! The (never named) storyteller and Becca have been best friends for all their lives. They share a lot of memories, and even share a plan for their future. They both think the nameless storyteller's older sister, Alice, is silly. Until, that is, Becca and Alice suddenly start to spend a lot of time together and the storyteller is certain she's lost her best friend - just as her birthday approaches! The story, by Susan Wallach, is very cute without being obnoxiously so; the text is simple enough for the target audience of third graders and the story is something most 8 year olds can relate to. Illustrator Paul E. Nunn's work is fantastic. The images are bright, colorful, and eye-catching with a lot of fun little details and not so girly as I expected (and feared!). The greatest negative, to me, is the fact that the storyteller never gets a name, not even in the illustrations - like, on a birthday cake would've worked! - AnnaLovesBooks
