One of Thorpe's best historicals. This one takes place during the 1680's, and concerns the ill fated coup lead by the Duke of Monmouth (King Charles' II bastard son) to wrest the crown from his uncle, King James. Thorpe, usually noted for making her heros much stronger mentally then her heroines, finally turns the tables and gives her heroine, Elinor, a backbone and strong mental fortitude. Thorpe also has her do a large majority of the rescuing. The hero, Gervase, spends much of his time hiding from the king's troops and generally kicking himself for making some bad personal decisions regarding his political choices, his idealism and his feelings regarding his wife-in-name-only. This switch-up made it a very refreshing book. Thorpe has a good command of the time period, and this offering from the many novels she's penned is one of her best.
