Your employees may pin pages to your chair

If you manage other people, you need to read this book. If you are at the bottom end of the management chain, you will still find it entertaining. But the real audience is the guy or gal who struggles with the responsibility of keeping other folks busy and happy. Maybe you're thinking, "I don't have time to do my job. I barely have time to keep up with the people who report to me. How am I supposed to make time to read this book?" Dude, you really need to read the book! The format is simple: Dr C, whose laundry list resume includes a decades-long history training leaders as well as an ongoing string of appearances on a Georgia TV station, answers his viewer mail. The questions he has picked are all from workers who are frustrated with something about their managers. Dr C's answers provide the paths to avoid (or climb back out of) the pitfalls of behaving like these misguided bosses. In some of the situations it was amusing to see aspects of the people I know and work with. In some instances, I felt the sting of recognition of my own failures as a boss. This book is written in simple language that sneaks up on you with its profound points. I often found myself thinking, "Of course, it's obvious a good manager should...hey, wait a minute, if it's obvious, how come I'm not doing that already?" And the parts that didn't apply directly to the work I do were at least interesting. The only problem I have now is deciding which of the many chunks of advice I should run with first.

Behind Your Back

This should be required reading for every first time manager or supervisor. The content is based on real issues and questions that employees have raised with Dr. Cummings, but would never surface directly with their manager. Dr. Cummings practical advice helps the manager and employee see both sides of each issue. Anyone who has worked in any organization will find a bit of themself, and will discover a part of themself in this book. A quick read that is relevant whether you are a CEO or a team leader.
