Behind the Face of Winter

A coming-of-age novel set in a Montreal in which immigrant youth totter on the edge of self-destruction and oblivion, in the face of brutal and racist police, an insensitive education system, and few prospects for the future. Thomas's language is spare, and his crackling dialogue and use of patois can compare with the best in Caribbean literature.

Quite a talented writer!

This book is one of my three favorite books because it has a depth other books lack. In a sense, it demonstrates how destructive on many levels it can be for an immigrant to leave his country of origin in search of a better "home". Afterall, there is always a price to pay when one seeks paradise, there are always "inner" battles to conquer before taming and settling down in a new "home". A very thoughtful and provocative book. Beleive me, it's a must-read.
