There are, of course, zillions of story-and-rhyme books for babies and toddlers out there. What is special about this one? First, it's attractively presented--the plush cover, fairly good design, large enough type, and accessible size. But really it's because we keep coming back to it--it's got a lot of "hits," so we rarely come away from dipping into it without being satisfied. There are, of course, a few old favorites from Mother Goose, but they are nicely intermixed with poems from Rossetti and Stevenson, and other classics, and some unfamiliar but still traditional and interesting stories. Basically, this does not greatly overlap other books of the type that we have--you could think of it as a collection of "overlooked classics for earliest ages." I also appreciate the range. There are some very easy selections for younger readers, but the book has "grown" with us so that now, at age 3 1/2, my son can still appreciate a lot of the poems and stories. It also helps considerably that there is an illustration, usually very appropriate, that goes with each selection.

My daughter received this book as a gift. It had loads of old favorites. What I liked most about it is that it was small and easy to hold while holding baby. I ordered 3 more to give as gifts.
