I bought this book in southern California in the mid-1980s when I was on vacation from the UK. My copy is very battered and on a recent holiday, when I took it to read for the 6th time, the front and back covers both tore off....this by far the most illuminating book about a marriage break up that I have ever read and it is as relevant today as it was when it was published well over 20 years ago. CDB Bryan who I had not heard of before, not have I heard of since, writes in the most convincing way of the most intricate of feelings of both men and women emotionally scarred by the break up of their relationships. I have lent this book to friends who have immediately identified with the protaganist of the story, as did I. It is neither easy nor light reading but is written with the benefit of some hindsight and with not a little humour. I was able to relate entirely to the scathing and vicious words of the protaganist's wife as their relationship dissolves in a series of bitter tableaux and I was equally enlightened by the realisation of the main character's shortcomings, as well as being enthralled by his sexual exploits which are described in lucid detail and great affection It is a fantastic book with a not-very-catchy title and should be read by everybody, particularly every man, who professes not to understand the reasons behind the break-up of his relationship or marriage. A must-read
