Newton Thornburg is a writer who is mostly known for his crime novels such as Cutter and Bone & Dreamland but he has also written an apocalypse novel (Valhalla) and in Beautiful Kate he has written a very dark family drama. Greg, in his forties, is a screenwriter who has fallen on hard times and so arrives for a stay at his old family home with young Hollywood girlfriend in tow. There he finds welcome from his sister Sarah but his younger brother is harder to impress and worst of all his father still rules over the house and has never forgiven Greg for running away when he was younger. Living in the old house begins to bring back memories for Greg who starts writing a diary that recalls the tragic deaths of his twin sister Kate and an older brother and of the incestuous relationship that developed with his twin. This is a very powerful book and once again a great novel from Newton Thornburg. It has recently been made into an Australian film so hopefully the film will do well and so Thornburg will get more of the attention he deserves.
