Susan Davis shows crafters how to create wonderful vintage-style buttons and turn them into attractive jewellery. The elegant projects are carved and stenciled, and made of such materials as metal, jet glass, pearl, bakelite, and celluloid.
I have gathered, sorted and purchased some old button assortments because I was inspired by the beautiful pictures. I have a craft date with my sis next week to make some jewelry. We're really excited to try our hands at this project.

Let me start by saying I paid FULL PRICE for this book, that is how much I was enchanted by it. I simply had to have it and have it now, and I am still quite happy that I did so. Does anyone ever pay full price anymore?? You should know that the writer has an associated web site that features terrific buttons and findings, but this book is not a hard sell for that business. If you collect vintage sewing items you will love just looking at this book. I collect old buttons, and I am pleased at how the book is arranged. Each chapter (after the introduction and "Getting Started") is divided by button type: Victorian Metal, Jet Glass, MOP (mother of pearl), Porcelain & China, Modern Glass, and Bakelite & Celluloid. Some readers might find this strange, but as I mentioned, if you are a collector of vintage items, this is a very sensible approach. And a visual feast, even if you don't make any of the items!! I need to stress that the instructions section of each project is actually shorter than the materials list, and some readers might not find this adequate. Also, the techniques section of the "Getting Started" chapter is only 2 pages, and prior wire/bead work will be most helpful for the beginner. Despite all this, this book opened up a new world to me, and was the springboard for many MANY subsequent book purchases. I don't think you will be disappointed especially if you are a vintage buttons/findings collector. And if you're not before buy this book, you sure will be afterwards!! This is a beautiful and inspiring addition to any crafter's book shelf.

What a beautifully photographed book with clear pictures on the types of buttons available and projects one can do with the buttons. It has inspired me to do my own button crafting and collecting. The only information that it lacks is where a crafter can purchase old or antique buttons, although I found that information by searching the internet.
