Bear Immortal: Collecting Issues 1-5

(Book #1 in the Bear Series)

Bear is a comic of doe-eyed hi-jinx, crazed slaughter, and expanding heads, all wrapped up with a fuzzy bow. See Bear suffer undignified ickiness, barely escape serious injury, and flee the deranged whims of his tormentor, Looshkin. It's a sweet crunchy bun of horrible joy.

Wha?

I don't know what the HECK some people want out of their comics.....Some sort of deep meaning to life it seems when I glance over certain other reviews here. Bear in my opinion is wonderful! I also love the style and wit of Jhonen Vasquez and Roman Dirge...But really why compare Bear to them? The only reason you could compare them is the fact they have the same comics label. In Bear you can't help but grow attached to the main characters. I mean,it is like Garfield on speed. An owner with a mad cat and swop the dog for a bear who is always maimed. Add delightful sprinklings of 'British' humour and a adorable yet mad drawing style and you have: BEAR! Just sit down and actually read it,it is great for making you laugh.

Heee hee Buhhhhhh!

If you like Evan Dorkin's Milk and Cheese, or Hewlett and Martin's Tank Girl, then this is the book for you. Swearing, Chainsaws, Fun with offal... It's all within the pages of Bear:Immortal. Treat yourself to sick laffs and weirdnessaplenty, and prepare to meet the funniest cartoon cat since Tom and Jerry hit the screens. Yes, it really is that good. Buy it. Go on. What are waiting for? Just buy it!

Bear... Let's all think about it for a minute

Bear rules. The writing is INTELLIGENT. You morons out there that think that Mr. Smart has been influenced by JTHM and Lenore need to finish elementary reading and realize that he is completely different. First of all, both Vasquez and Dirge copy each other and readily admit it. If you believe that they are the "masters" of graphic novels... you are sorely mistaken. Try... Charles Addams and Edward Gorey (wait.... they were born before your grandparents so, you may know of the Addams Family movies... but not the comic strips!). Then, Tim Burton. Do you not see the similarities in their works? Vasquez and Dirge are the unoriginal ones. Please, let's stop acting like they are some kind of messiahs for the unaccepted nerds. Rant aside, I highly recommend Bear. It is refreshening. It is a book that I have read from the beginning issue and have not been able to put them down!!!

RAHHH gumba.

What a GREAT review title, huh? Well anyway. Bear Immortal is a collection of the Bear series 1-5. And ALL OF IT ROCKS! I never found myself wanting to skip forward or my mind wandering. Jamie Smart's wacky sense of humor and style of drawing makes for a fun trip into Bear's life. Looshkin is probably the funniest part because he is just such a big freak. There is a mini-comic at the end called "Insecurity: The Musical" which is hilarious. BUY for anyone who is a fan of Jhonen Vasquez, Roman Dirge, or just a funny comic book in general.

he's bear he's bear HE'S BEAR!

he's bear he's bear he's made of human hair! poke his nose and his head grows he's bear he's BEAR! HE'S BEAR! gotta love it.... okay so i haden't actually read this comic before today... because it was halloween i went shopping and i found this graphic novel with the little picture of a teddy bear cut in half on the front.. i picked it up and bought it .. without even looking inside ... this is because i have heard a LOT about it from my friends so anyway i brought it home.. opened it up.. and literally within minutes? i mean the opening paragraph had me in stiches... the thing i really like about 'bear' is that its not your whole average conventional comic.. its unique in every way possible.. even the style of the drawing is really imaginative... its quite a thick novel... in fact i think its probably the thickest one i own .. and i think the style is very similar to Jhonen Vasquez's comics.. particularly 'filler bunny' so if you're looking for something unique.. heart warming.. and amusing.. this novel thingy is DEFINITELY for you.. and you too will agree with the author that bear is just too GODDAMN DASHING! this is Clayton, Signing off
