Great Art, Story could have been more polished.

I agree with the other reviewers that the story was a bit convoluted. There was a big set up but the resolution was too quick and unsatisfying. I do give the story credit though for it's epic ambition. I hate how modern comic books are so decompressed that it usually takes you little time to read them. This, however, was definitely ambitious in the old fashion way - it really does read like a novel. It took me four nights to read it, which is significant, since most graphic novels nowadays I can read in just one short night. The other fault that I have with it is that the book is printed on cheap paper and it has a crappy binding, but I guess the trade off is that it's a cheap book. You definitely get your money's worth in story and pages. Speaking of which - the art is absolutely gorgeous. Some of the best Batman art that I've seen in a long time. The book is not perfect, but as what it is at the price, I definitely recommend it.

City of Crime: Great artwork, dramatic story

City of Crime is a stunning masterpiece worthy of any comic collector's shelf. Though the story is somewhat challenging to follow, City of Crime is dramatic, poetic, and suspenseful in its own Batman kind of way. The story retains that dark, Gotham feel, and keeps the theme that the city holds many secrets. And so, a lot of the mysteries in City of Crime are never revealed... Worth the buy.

Great batman story

Finding a young girl's killer. Saving people from a massive fire. Stopping Mr. Freeze from marrying an unwilling Nora look-a-like. Taking down a dangerous man who abuses his wife. All while uncovering a plot that could potentially kill everyone in Gotham. Good stuff

Batman at this Darkest

This is one of my very favourite Batman tales and definitely the most underrated. I'll tell you why I like it, it has every element to a perfect Batman story and every villain is taken in the sense they were meant to be...insane. The Penguin, Mister Freeze and the Ventriloquist have mostly become 2nd and 3rd tear Bat villains after Two Face, Joker, Poison Ivy, Croc, Scarecrow, Ras and even Riddler with that Hush arc (while everyone else was), almost as if seen unworthy. Actually, none of the three villains I mentioned were included in the Hush arc. They are gimmicky. Freeze freezes, Penguin's obsessed with birds and the ventriloquist is a guy dominated by a lifeless puppet. But people forget why these criminals are so obsessed with these gimmicks...they are all insane. Here, the obsessions are not downplayed in any way, they are heightened to extreme levels defining why these characters are great threats and just downright scary. Penguin spends his nights with woman, with his bed surrounded by birds (freaky) and freeze will freeze to death the entire workforce of a meat packing plant just so they can be witnesses to his distorted vision of a wedding (very freaky). There's this amazing scene when freeze is supposed to kill a woman, but kills his entire crew instead since she reminds him of his wife. I tell you, the insanity is strong here. And the whole city is sick like this. You get a really good sense of that here. This is the DARKEST way Gotham has ever been written. If you can name a darker story, please comment below, I am very curious to see what it could be. And then you've got Batman seen in everyone of his manyfacets. He is a team mate (with Robin), a man, a detective, a guardian angel, a martial arts master who can take on an entire army and a god who can destroy that army in a single move. The plot has been written in previous reviews so I didn't want to seem redundant. Essentially, this is the story of Batman (and his villains) slowly losing grasps of their city...and the Batman taking it all back. If you like your Batman stories dark, this is what you have to read. The subjects are very dark and very mature, so this is definitely not for kids :)
