This is the August,2003 episode, in the long-running series of The Trailsman. This is an excellent Western and gives the reader everything he looks for and sticks with being a true Western and doesn't drift into being a Whodunit or a Mystery story. Starting off with an explosion and attack on a train, the capture of a group of orphaned children and a newspaper reporter who was helping them to find new homes, and turnning into a rip-roaring adventure on the part of our hero ,Skye Fargo, running down a gang of owlhoots in a mission to bring the children to safety and the outlaws to justice. In this episode we get the shoot-outs,the tracking of desperados on the run,an encounter with a friendly Indian who provides him with a secret weapon,Skye facing impossible odds,Lawmen gone bad, time limits, and physical challenges. While the end is never in doubt, the journey is filled with action and surprises. Some westerns have much more colorful writing than others, and this is one of those that is loaded with great lines and expressions. Here is just an axample of what you're in store for: "Out here it's every fool for himself, and the devil take the hindmost." "Now we're playing by my rules, and you just remember-- hell ain't even HALF full!" "Rumor has it that heaven doesn't want me and hell's afraid I'll take over!" "Now,the Apaches, they're partial to hanging a prisoner upside down over a small fire. They slowly roast his skull until the brains bubble. You want I should build a fire, boss? "If brains was horse s--t," Red taunted his cousin,"you'd have a clean corral, you know that?" Once again ,a tip of the hat ,to the artwork that graces and adds some real color to this novel.
