Even small children can enjoy the story; delve into deeper meanings over time

I read this book every night for months as my young toddlers (then 4, 2 and 2) listened and followed along intently as we thoroughly enjoyed our reading time together. I added embellishments like singing and moving with the dance steps (whirls and twirls, twists and hops, etc.) that they looked forward to each evening along with being able to point out details in the illustrations that added depth to the visual experience. The story is easy to read and enjoy even if the deeper meanings aren't explored initially. When the opportunity arises, a parent can easily guide the discussion through a wealth of options, emotions and reactions that may occur when interacting with others. There are excellent examples of good or bad ways of facing less-than-pleasant emotions and the outcome of choosing to hide or reveal ones fears or emotions. Ultimately, this story teaches readers to look for ways to appreciate others for being present and involved and then gives credit for the positive things they may contribute. This story is interesting and engaging enough to simply entertain children with an adventure, a slight conflict or struggle to overcome and a happy ending and there is an additional opportunity to delve as deeply as a child is ready for into the more complex issues presented in the tale, if desired. Beautiful illustrations add to the appeal for all ages.

My favorite of the Oram/Varley "Badger" books

This is my favorite of the three Oram and/or Varley "Badger" books. Admittedly, "Badger's Parting Gifts" is the big award-winner, and it is a wonderful book that serves a very important purpose (teaching children about death); it's just not a fun book. "Badger's Bring Something Party" is a fun book. It's like "Wind in the Willows" but for very small children. My two-year-old son loves it. We talk about the different kinds of animals (badgers, bats, stoats, snails) and what they bring to the party (fairy cakes, hats, dance steps). We also talk about Mole and why he didn't bring anything to the party (at first), how this made the other animals angry with him, and what he did to remedy the situation. I say we "talk" about all this because, even though the story is a simple one, the text is heavy for toddlers. We've been reading this book for six months now, and I'm still only actually reading fifty percent of the text. This should not, however, discourage parents from buying the book, as I think it's important to have books that children can grow into. People should just be aware that they'll have to do most of the story-telling at first.
