Interesting viewpoint on an important issue

A contentious book that has provoked a lot of discussion, Hewlett has written about an issue that is affecting Western society today, and not just women. She lays on the table the important issue that for a variety of reasons women are leaving having a baby too late, often in the expectation that modern medical science means that conceiving a baby in later age is easy. Well, as Hewlett points out, it isn't, and there are going to be a lot of disappointed people out there. This issue is important for many reasons. Not only does it concern women's lifestyle choices, but also issues such a pensions, taxation and future healthcare - if women are having less children, either through choice or circumstance, where are the future taxpayers going to come from? This reader got the feeling that the author was trying very hard to avoid writing a book that could be taken by the far-right as an excuse to push women back into the home, and I think she has succeeded in instead writing a well balanced book. The only problems I had is the fact that she kept repeating the same data throughout the book, but this is a minor point. I would recommend this book to any women between the ages of 18 and 40, and to any man that plans on marrying, working with or employing a woman as well. You may not agree with everything it has to say, but you will probably have a more rounded perspective on women's lives today.

Mothers, buy this for your daughters!

..buy this book for any woman who wants babies 'when my career is settled' or 'after the next promotion' or 'when I feel ready' and for every man who encourages women in their thirties to put it off because he isn't ready to commit or doesn't want the competition just yet...Unfortunately ladies, the fact that we want babies much later than our mothers isn't supported by our fertility, careers and sometimes even our family. This very readable book tells you why and backs it up with solid arguments and statistics that may be the difference between becoming a mother one day or lamenting being misinformed, misguided and missing out.

Should be required reading for all schoolgirls

This book blew me out of the water, especially as I read it just after I'd had my first baby and was beginning to feel demoted. Once you've read this you'll stop waiting around for Mr.Right and instead start planning. This is one area of your life which you do not want to leave to chance. We all want to be able to support ourselves independently and provide the best for our family but when do you know you have arrived at the best point in your career to have a baby? It's a chimera. This is a book which will raise more questions than it answers...such as, why is it girls are doing better than boys at school and yet do not get promoted at work as fast? Take a good look around you in case you have been duped into thinking that everyone is equal. Men pick and choose what they do, women do the rest. No wonder, then, that so few can balance a GOOD job (career) and their domestic resonsibilities.
