What difference can one tiny turtle make? Not much, thinks Baby Honu, until a baby dolphin trapped on the beach inspires him to try. This description may be from another edition of this product.
We bought this book in a gift shop in Hawaii 2 years ago and it has been a favorite ever since. My kids are now 8 years old and 5 years old and both love the story. Baby Honu is a tiny baby sea turtle who learns that no one is too small to make a big difference. The artwork is bright and colorful and looks as if a lot of heart went into it and the story. The only thing that could make it better would be if I could find an audio version where it's read in a Hawaiian accent!
"It is the way of the ocean"

Tammy Yee writes and paints with knowledge and passion about all things Hawaiian. When you visit her web page, and see her lying next to basking honu, you know where she got her inspiration to write about honu! In Baby Honu Saves the Day, the baby dolphin has been washed ashore, and it is up to the baby honu to find a way to get her back into the water. This 10.8 x 8.5 x 0.4 inch book is just made for sitting with a child and reading this story together. Yee certainly makes use of artistic license in stretching the biology of the various creatures in the book. A baby honu is dark gray on top and white on the bottom, not bright green and orange. Great white shark teeth are more triangular and serrated, and the fish is strongly counter-shaded. The "sting ray" is a spotted eagle ray, and the eel pictured appears to be a snowflake eel, which has teeth for crushing, not "jagged teeth". Whew! This might sound like I'm being critical! But Yee's book is not meant to be a biology text. She is telling a story, and sharing the Hawaiian words for the various sea creatures. Mickey Mouse is only a caricature of a real mouse, but baby honu and her friends are meant to be more accurate depictions. Yee is close! This is a fun story to read and share, probably best suited for 8 and under, and all those young at heart.
An Excellent Story for all ages!

Baby Honu (a turtle) doesn't think that he can help Keiki Naia (a dolphin) who is stranded on the beach. He asks many animals to help but all say it is the way of the ocean and tell him to give up. Finally, he gets an idea from a creature even smaller than he is and he realizes that even though he is small he can still make a difference. We bought this book on a trip to Hawaii and it immediately become one of my 2 year old daughter's all time favourite books. I love that it uses the Hawaiian names for the animals. My daughter uses her favourites, "Kohola", "Honu", and "Keiki Naia", in her usual speech. This book is great for all ages and the illustrations are stunning. I love the message in this book: perseverance and small actions that bring about big results! You will not be disappointed with this book!
