An indespensible resource of you want to stop the arguing and raise responsible kids.

Not sure what the other reader was talking about. I am an agnostic so I am pretty aware of that kind of thing. I was also a teacher. Not only does Love and Logic work in the classroom but it does amazing things with my kids. I have 2 toddlers and I think the Love and Logic books and videos are an indespensible resource. It seems to me that the previous reviewer was just looking for a forum to rant about something totally unrelated to these books. He also wasn't reviewing this book - I guess some people will actually mislead people to try and get their voice heard. If click on "see my other reviews" under his name you will see that he has reviewed every book in the Love and Logic series with this rhetoric that is based on complete ignorance. Charles Fay and Foster Cline (founders of Love and Logic) are from Evergreen Colorado - not Colorado Springs and have nothing to do with the whole "family first" thing. There is no affiliation whatsoever. Again, not sure what the other reviewer was talking about - but it is a shame that he may turn people away from a resource that is the most effective tool I have come across to raise children who are responsible, able to make choices effectively, have great self-esteem, and to avoid all the arguments and power struggles that come with parenting.

"More of the same" is just what this doctor orders!

To really get good at Love & Logic, most parents and teachers find that they must "reprogram" themselves. Changing old habits can be difficult to do, even if it is worth it. But repetition of this Love & Logic "classic" IS worthwhile for most people. The Key principles of Love & Logic - preserving the child/teen's self-concept, empathy before consequence, shared thinking, and shared control - just do not come naturally and easily for most parents reared in our "drill sergeant" cultural norm for parenting. The latter approach does not work (well or AT ALL) for many children and teens. But, when done right, Love & Logic often does work well, without anger, lectures, threats or warning. And as a result, after a "Love & Logic moment" with a challenging child/teen, parents and teachers walk away feeling good --rather than angry or feeling guilty over what they said or did. Thus we get back to the title - "more of the same". When you have decided that you ARE going to change a habit (e.g. unsuccessful parenting style), what often helps most is repetition and practice. Listening to L & L words of wisdom over and over, and over again, (or reading and reading again) is probably the most cost effective way of reprogramming yourself. This is the only behavioral approach I initially recommend for children and teens who are perceived as being "ADHD, ODD, ASD, Strong-Willed, etc." or otherwise challenging. It is hard work at first. Give yourself one month for each year of age of the oldest child to seriously work on it before you decide it is not for you. If you are having REALLY serious problems with your child/teen, seek out professional one-on-one help from someone familiar with L & L, as your first choice, if available. Work at it -- you and your kids are worth it! A. W. Atkinson, MD, Board Certified in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics
