This book is designed to teach all four skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing- and provides beginning students with all the necessary tools to communicate in Italian.
I purchased this book as a first year Italian student. Having taken many language classes before and having rolled around in hundreds of books, these are the points I think should be made about this book... whether they are good or bad is a matter of opinion: There is very little English instruction. This can be difficult for someone who is not in a class, but forces your brain to understand the language much sooner. The pictures are black and white. Boring for a visual learner, beneficial for people who are easily distracted. There is a lot of cultural and historical information about Italy. The "dictionary" in the back only goes from Italian to English, not English to Italian. A lot of the words in culture-related passages are not defined. Overall, I think it was worth the money.
