Best of the Best

At last! A sensuous, heady romance about people past the age of puberty. The interplay between intelligent adults with powerful emotional and physical attraction makes this novel a page turner. I carried it around the house, reluctant to put it down as Paula battled Boyd's magnetism. The additional element of Paula's journey from grieving widowhood to newly-emerging selfhood gives the story a depth not normally found in the genre and adds richness to the conflict and resolution. Boyd Mackenzie is a contemporary hero -- strong, charismatic, resolute, yet tender and supportive in his pursuit of Paula. He carefully woos and wins her despite her suspicions and misgivings. What a treat! I highly recommend this book.

Beautifully-Drawn Romance With Realistic Characters

This is the kind of book you'll want to read over and over again. It's like watching your favorite movie. All the elements of a romance are there but with a twist, an added element of personal growth. Paula Wincott is a woman who is in denial, and Boyd Mackenzie is a man whose love frees her from her sequestered past and patiently guides her into a more exciting and liberating future. He's charismatic and wise as well as a romantic and inventive lover, and despite her misgivings, Paula finds him irrestible. You'll read this book in one sitting because you won't want to put it down. Get a cup of coffee and a comfy chair.

deep character study

Paula met Sam Wincott when she was an eighteen years old college student at the University of Colorado and he was her chemistry professor. They married; she became pregnant and dropped out of school. They raised two children over the three decades they were together, but at sixty-eight Sam died. Fifty years old Paula decides to go back to school. However, she is unhappy to find her chemistry class taught by Boyd Mackenzie who her late spouse hated and accused of stealing his work. She holds him in contempt, but the Department Chair Dr. King forces them to work together to complete Sam's last project. As they fall in love, her daughter Emma objects while her son Morgan encourages her to fly free. This deep character study pays homage to Ibsen as Paula begins to come out of a cocoon starting with her return to college. She is clearly the star, but the support cast including her late spouse enable the audience to follow her progress from a secure caged bird to a fledgling (even though a grandma) learning to fly. The romance serves as a further catalyst that encourages Paula to leave Ghosts behind in A Doll's House. Sharon Noble provides her audience with a strong look at a woman seeking self-actualization.
