Australia is the smallest continent on Earth. It is also part of a system of 2,000 islands in the Pacific islands called Oceania. This continent-country is also an island because it is surrounded by water. Australia boasts three great deserts and the largest monolith on Earth, Ayers rock, a place that to the Aboriginal people of Australia is the center of Earth. Off the northeastern coast of Australia is the Great Barrier Reef, a collection of coral reefs. At 1,250 mile long, it is the world's largest coral reef.
