Mary Elizabeth does not want to go to Courtland, Alabama for a visit with her Great-Aunt Phoebe, but with her mother insisting, and her aunt pleading, the thirteen year old has little to say in the matter. Many people in the valley have deep secrets, even her Aunt Phoebe, and Mary Elizabeth learns that they keep those secrets buried deep, protecting them at all cost.When Mary Elizabeth leaves the valley, she too will carry her secrets with her that she will bury deep as she protects those she loves. Going to the valley teach her not only about family, but the meaning of true friendship.
