A wonderful first book...

This first novel by Donna Jones evokes a strong sense of what it means to be a daughter, a woman, and a mother and a friend throughout time. Her descriptive writing style provides the reader with a visceral feeling of the human experiences eloquently weaved into her tale. I could think and feel the experience that was Scotland; I could vividly imagine the southern coastline and feel its healing power. Donna has provided her readers with a true "experience" that takes you through a lifetime of events and emotions. The ending was heart warming and true to the essence of her saga. A wonderful read by a truly talented first author. I can't wait until her next book is published!

Lifetime, WE - get your movie plans ready!

A very heartwarming beginning, some tense moments, and a brilliant finale. This work surpasses revelation of writing talent. Donna's gifts of active listening, watching, learning, relating to others, as a professional and a writer, are evident in this novel.

Great summer read!

This is a well written first novel by author Donna Jones. Initially It was hard for me to understanding the "Scottish tongue" but it didn't take long to understand the importance of that dialect to the development of the characters and setting in this novel. Although I have never been to Scotland, the book took me there with all the historical information provided. The use of music through out the book and across several decades was fascinating; I couldn't help but sing the tunes in my head. The importance of family and especially motherhood is explored and emphasized. I really felt at home in Part 3 "Blue Moon" when Audrey returns to the barrier Island of South Carolina. I would strongly recommend this book!

A wonderful debut novel!

The author of this interesting new novel carries the reader through sixty years and across several continents with ease. She uses music thoughtfully throughout the book and relates the climate of the times and how this effects decisions people make in their lives. The main character, Audrey, is not without flaws (which makes her believable) but it is easy to relate to her circumstances and her quest to keep her family intact. "Auld Lang Syne" is a compassionate tale about the strength of motherhood. I highly recommend it!

What a great book!

Auld Lang Syne: A Novel is a heartfelt story of one woman's journey through significant periods in our world's history. It begins in Scotland during the second world war, and paints a wonderful word picture of Scottish heritage and traditions. As Audrey grows up and gains her independence, the world progresses through a period of renewal interrupted by the Viet Nam war. The reader learns the cultural changes that occurred in the 60's and 70's in the U.S. from a new perspective as Audrey must adjust to life in South Carolina as she takes roots there. Through the women's movement and the boom times of the 90's, the novel focuses on the value of family, dreams, and the quest for knowledge about Audrey's own roots. I recommend this book highly for readers of all ages.
