Stimulation for a Child's Senses

Touch, Feel, and Hear At The Farm is another in the long line of Hinkler Books that help to keep children entertained through the use of sights, sounds, and touch. This book features only four different farm animals, but there is enough stimulation to keep children entertained. Youngsters will enjoy the sounds of each animal and parents will appreciate that the sound component isn't a single chirp from the chicken or a single oink from the pig, but rather a roughly five- second sound bite of the animal making its characteristic noises. The pages also feature a patch of fur for children to touch and the different pictures on each set of pages will educate little ones on the different versions and different appearances that each farm animal can take. Entertainment is an important component of Touch, Feel, and Hear At The Farm but education is also an important part of this book. With each of the four animals, the book explains important facts about each animal, along with a few random facts. This educational component is more that what I often see in similar books, which tend to stick with the entertainment factor and ignore the learning aspect. My girls like the sights and sounds of this book, but they are not too thrilled with the touch aspect. I am a little disappointed with this component also. The patch of fur and the animal pictures stimulate imagination, but the problem is that the patches of fur feel exactly the same. I'm not asking for the real thing here, but they could have at least offered three different textures of fur/hair or at least tried to mimic the actual fur or hair for each animal. Each one of the three examples in this book feels like cheap carpeting. True, very young kids won't know the difference. But other children's books with animal skin are at least slightly more realistic. Aside from the problems with the fur, this is still a very good children's book that grabs a child's attention and keeps them entertained. Some parents might grow impatient with youngsters who continuously press the four sound buttons and will grow tired of hearing the sounds over and over again. But parents will appreciate the educational aspects of Touch, Feel, and Hear At The Farm nonetheless and most every parent will find this book a worthwhile addition to their children's library
