At The Crossroads: A Vision Of Hope

I purchased this book after accidentally flipping channels one evening and started watching Bishop Doran on EWTN. While I am not an expert on religion or spirituality, my impression of the book is the same impression of the writer -- straight forward and uplifting. What I found interesting is even though the book was written in 2000 it is current to many of the changes going on in the world in 2009. This is a book to read if you're interested in understanding your spiritual nature as it relates to Catholic teachings and want a place to begin your reading on the subject. Even non-Catholic Christians will find encouragement and a good, but brief understanding, of the history of their faith. The only fault I see in the book is that it was too short; but maybe the Bishop did this on purpose to allow the reader to meditate on what he said.

Recommending Reading

Having heard Bishop Doran's sermons a few times at Confirmations and Graduations, I was not at all surprised by the wealth of information in this book. His use of stories to make a point is inspiring. Giving word origins (from the Latin...) to help us understand commonly used, but not necessarily fully understood words brings insight. And his use of pure logic is refreshing in this day and age. I read the book in one evening and by the time I was finished, I was reading through tears. I must say I am extremely proud and thankful to live and attend church in Bishop Doran's diocese.

discussions with a good friend

bishop doran has been a priest for 35 years, so he has experience dealing with many of life's problems. the book is a compilation of articles, sermons, speeches as well as writings specifically for the book.the topics are those faced by most people in the daily grind of human existence. doran's prose gives one an undertanding of how God is trying to use your problems and pain to redeem the world. he also gives good sound advice on how to solve the issues and learn from one's mistakes.he takes the approach of a good friend or mentor in helping the reader negotiate the shoals of everyday living. he is a loyal priest to catholic doctrine, so don't expect any softening of doctrine.an excellent read, and a good companion to which you can turn to when you have questions of "why me?"
