Changed My Perspective; I Plan To Change Theirs

No book about "at risk" students that I have read has captured the reality of school FROM THE STUDENT'S INNER WORLD as accurately and surprisingly as this book. To get the most out of the book, I utilized the unique ANNOTATED Table Of Contents. I grouped the chapters in a way that I could first understand the author's special gift of identifying with students who "don't, won't and can't" learn what we are teaching. Then, I put together a cluster of chapters which proved that this author has been in the real world. He describes approaches that DO NOT WORK. I then read four chapters that provided a sort of road map for providing approaches THAT DO WORK with such students. I have met with teachers and parents throughout the country who struggle daily with the so-called "at risk" youngster. This is the first book that includes an extensive, down-to-earth chapter FOR PARENTS whose struggle is 24/7. What a great benefit to be able to say, "Read this book. You'll begin to solve your specific problems with some how-to-go-about-it advice that comes from someone who has truly been there and honestly done that." This is not an academic or research-jargon book. This book is for the adventurous adult who dares get into the head of a student who is "at risk of not being taught" and is willing to start with the kid's perspective to begin making an even greater positive difference than ever before.

Reviewer K. Trent Didn't Even Read the Cover

A letter to Reviewer, K. Trent from Author, Bill Page What is amazing is that you read 280 pages with 31 independent articles and say "never gives a solution to try". I request a re-read at least of the cover. The subtitle on the cover of my book reveals "the solutions" to the At-Risk Student Problems. Feeling Their Pain, (Walking in their moccasins--empathisizing) Accepting their Plight, (Compassion for their embarrassment and discomfiture) Understanding their defensive ploys (Recognizing misbehavior as defense mechaniams to cover their loss of dignity and acceptance)--ARE the solutions to the at-risk problems. The book explains and reinforces these solutions. The notorious at-risk behaviors of apathy, hostility, and misbehavior, etc are symptoms, not causes of the problem. Solutions, as my book explains, lie in attitude and relationship, not the usual carrot-and-stick gimmicks offered by so many other at-risk books.
