As the Pendulum Swings

Reviewed by Carol Hoyer, PhD, for Reader Views (05/10) This book gives readers the chance to look at how they live their life and shows how negativism eats at all of us. How did we get like this? Where did we go off the path? The second part of the book talks about hypnosis, which is not understood by many and yet can be so helpful. Through his own experiences of wanting to change his life to be more positive and calming, the author takes us through what we can do to make positive changes. His fascination with hypnosis led him to learn to use this skill to help others and learn about himself along the way. Often what we perceive to be happiness is not. His ability to admit his shortcomings is refreshing. He writes with no pretense of knowing everything, but relates that learning about our selves is very important. Our past experiences, whether true or not, defines who we are today. Many of our memories are what others have told us, and we believe them to be true. Yet, we need to question everything and find the truth, if there is a real truth out there. His information on hypnosis dispels a lot of myths. In my college courses I teach in Psychology, hypnosis is a favorite topic. Not being a subject matter expert in this area, I found this book to be very helpful in learning what it is and how it works. I have been able to discuss this book in my classes. The fact that the author led us on his journey to a more peaceful life was very informative. Many expect "miracles" to happen in therapy and hypnosis. We reject what we don't know or feel comfortable with. In "As the Pendulum Swings" by Lindsay A. Brady, he gives sound advice on how to live a more meaningful life with honesty and passion.

A choice pick that should not be missed

What is hypnotherapy, truly? "As the Pendulum Swings: If it Isn't Hypnosis, Then What is It?" is the studies of Lindsay A. Brady on the subject of hypnotherapy. Offering his own ideas and thoughts through his own experiments with tens of thousands of clients during the past few decades, he discusses hypnosis, past life regression, and more, it's an intriguing array of ideas that should not be missed by those in an interest in the psychological and metaphysical. "As the Pendulum Swings" is a choice pick that should not be missed.

Discovering the Connection between Peace of Mind and the Joy of Consciousness

"As the Pendulum Swings" is the true life story of Lindsay A. Brady, nationally recognized clinical hypnotherapist. The book is written in two parts. In Part One Brady relates the story of his early interest in hypnosis, of his curiosity as to the mind/brain connection, and of his quest for answers to his unresolved questions. He talks about the secret of overcoming a lack of confidence, his inhibitions, and scholastic deficits, and of his low self perception. Throughout the book Brady draws on compelling illustrative case studies to give the reader a better understanding of the process and objectives of hypnosis and hypnotherapy. He explains how the dynamic term "perceptionism" is the driving force behind hypnotherapy. Brady tells of how he developed his approach to help his clients overcome their self destructive behavior. Part Two explores the theory behind hypnosis and of the influences that led to his conclusions. He talks about the Arizona Society for Professional Hypnosis, of perception, regression, and altered consciousness. Brady shares of conversations held in his own "inner room" drawing on wisdom from conversations with an inner wisdom he named "Socrates." The book concludes with a comprehensive appendix which includes detailed information on the structure of a typical perceptionism session, perception's influence, the nervous system, and muscular behavior. He also gives insight into eliminating the adversities of stress and anxiety. I appreciated the bibliography which includes both book resources and available University Courses. Brady's writing is intellectually stimulating, fast moving, and hilarious. His self deprecating humor belies his true genius. He is highly entertaining, filled with profound insight into understanding consciousness and self fulfillment. "As the Pendulum Swings" is sure to be a welcome answer to anyone interested in investigating the "mind/brain" connection.
