A one-stop record containing everything A's fans want to know about their favorite baseball team, this resource is packed with anecdotes, history, explanations of traditions, statistics, trivia, and photos.
I am a great fan of the writing of author Steve Travers and have bought most of his books. I have given quite a few as gifts to sports fan friends of mine, and always they get rave reviews. A'S ESSENTIAL is another winner. Travers, aside from having covered the A's for the SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER, grew up in the Bay Area going to 35-40 A's games a year with his dad (plus all the post-season games in their heyday), then actually played minor league ball in the Oakland orgnaization. He was teammates with Jose Canseco, went to USC with Mark McGwire, and it is obvious this talented scribe knows all there is to know about the A's. One gets the impression that if he revealed EVERYTHING, some might not be fit to print, but overall his grasp of inside baseball and the nature of the A's unique place in history is unmatched by any writer who has tried to cover this team. Billy Beane wrote an entertaining foreword and it is simply great.
