Artist and garden

It should come as no surprise that many artists are inspired by nature and gardens. In many cases the artists' own works inspire their personal gardens. This fascinating and entertaining book profiles 20 artists and their gardens. Many are famous (Monet, Rubens, Renoir) and some are lesser known (Emil Nolde, Joaquin Sorolla) - some contemporary (Jennifer Bartlett, Kim Ondaatje), some not. This book is so well written that the prose alone could stand on its own. However, the addition of gorgeous color photographs of both the artists gardens and their paintings make this large, over-sized book a special one indeed. Each artist is profiled by a brief biography, a description of their work and influence and the importance of their gardens in their lives. (One particular artist, Childe Hassam, was actually influenced by his neighbor, Celia Thaxter's garden.) In addition to the previous artists mentioned, chapters also include Henry Moore, Frida Kahlo, Gustave Caillebotte, William Morris, Isamu Noguschi, Patrick Heron, Paul Cezanne, John James Audubon, Carl Milles, Barbara Hepworth, Frederick Carl Friseke, and Gertrude Jekyll)
