Wonderful Art History

This book is a fantastic and hyper detailed review of art history. This book comes in two volumes so the reader will need to get volume two for a complete story. There are several editions of this set of books, and the closer you get to the present the more they cost, as a general rule. Of course, you get more up to date information with the more recent editions; however, art history is a rather stable area of history so buying one of the older cheaper editions is really not a downside unless you’re desperate for the absolute latest in theory and information. I bought an older edition to save money and I have found it to be a good move. Mine did not come with a CD or Artnotes. The book is a complete review in that it covers the historical facts along with theory and the connections between various art movements. The reading is not dull at all. Excellent writing, and good reproductions of the visual art. Highly recommended. PS: the book is a very large size and is heavy. I have to lay it on a table to read it. AD2

Very pleased

The quality of this book is exactly as it was described by the seller. It arrived quickly. :-)

Beautiful and Informative

This book was for a class, so I had to get it--but I really did enjoy it. Clearly written, beautifully illustrated. One of my treasured resource books.

Encouraging and inclusive book!

Finally, an art book which includes not just female artists but also art from more regions than Europe and Great Britain. This book is consice and factual in its assessment of art history. Considering that the basic appreciation of art is subjective and therefore opinion based, Stokstad keeps her personal views to herself and merely reflects the views of each period or region which affected art (and therefore art history) and why certain types were popular. I would recomment this as a good expansive look at art history for students or art enthusiasts!

Watch out for $30 version (only a study guide)

The $30 version is too good to be true. Although it would appear that you are ordering an "attractively packaged two-volume set," you are actually ordering a study guide for what I am sure is an attractively packaged two-volume set.

Great intro to art text

I was fortunate enough to take a class from Professor Stokstad; she is as great of an author as a teacher! This book is a perfect introduction to art of many cultures, not just Western art like Janson's chestnut "History of Art". This book provides the stepping stone for further exploration in the field of art history.
