Action, suspense, character development and more

Eco-terrorism never seemed like an honest moral choice-until now (although in fairness, the young radical hero's actions are more monkey-wrenching than terrorism). Paul Watkins' suspenseful novel is at once character-and plot- driven. Watkins' books always have a moral core, and that is particularly true of this book. This work is a morality play, with multiple comments and themes on environmental issues, the effects of war, and basic good and evil. I cannot recommend this book enough-for the life of me, I cannot fathom a recommendation of less than 5 stars.

A Real Masterpiece of THIS time!

Watkins perfectly depicts the dualing emotions involved whenever money and big business come up against what is best for the long term common good. This is poetry in action. If you want a book that will eat at your conscience and one that causes you to reexamine your very value system this is it! Paul Watkins in a brilliant writer and a true asset to his generation!

He can't write a bad book!

Having read (and loved) Paul Watkins' stunning memoir STAND BEFORE YOUR GOD I picked up this novel purely on the basis of name recognition. What a fortunate thing to do! His writing is incisive, probing, and engaging. Every page contains an insight concerning why people act the way they do, and every detail is nurtured to full flowering. This is spare prose which is at the same time unbelievably lush.At first I thought I wouldn't be able to get interested in the story, but Watkins' sensitivity to his characters' minds, and the way in which he makes you care about everyone--even the "bad guys"-- makes you believe you're in the company of genius. Too bad he has only seven books out there: I can't wait till I can read them all, but I know it'll be a bittersweet time when I finish the last. He's simply too good to pass up!

Archangel proves literary fiction is not just for women.

Archangel is a taut thriller about an eco-terrorist out to stop the owner of a logging company from clear cutting the Algonquin forest in Maine. Paul Watkins, is unlike most literary novelists because he writes extremely well but can maintain a plot and keep the reader in as much suspense and wonder as Tom Clancy or Stephen King. So much literary fiction is written with female readers in mind because they make up the largest portion of the market for books of this type. Watkins on the other hand has challanged himself to accomplish the more difficult task. He succeeds wonderfully!
