This is an excellent collection of essays on the novels of Samuel Richardson, especially as pertains to teaching them in a college classroom. The book introduces teaching approaches and background material, and then includes a variety articles each on Pamela, Clarissa and Sir Charles Grandison. Personally, I was most interested in the Sir Charles Grandison essays, since there is little material available on understanding (and teaching!) that neglected lengthy classic - the favorite novel of Jane Austen. Instructors often shy away from doing so because of the difficulty procuring the book and the necessity in many cases of using excerpts, a condensed version, or only a few volumes. The articles in this book are particularly useful in helping instructors develop new ideas in regard to how to teach these books, and especially to gain some insight in regard to what approaches work best in the classroom.
