I first read this book about 20 years ago and fell in love for the first time. The writing was so well done, that at the age of 12 I felt the pain Sophie and James went through when the war separated them. Theirs was a sweet, tender love that didn't yet know the destruction war brings. The love that Carl and Pia found later in the book, is a different one. It hurts to read about the disillusion and indiference Carl feels, knowing who he was once upon a time. This is a book not only worth reading, but definately worth keeping!!
A BEAUTIFUL STORY OF FRIENDSHIP, LOVE, AND LOYALTY IN
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 25 years ago
WWI. R.T. Stevens tells this stirring story, which does not dwell on the battles in the war, but on the people affected by it. I have read it many times and because of it I have read more of Stevens's books, which focus primarily on WWI. His stories paint a beautifully realistic portrait of a world lost.
