It is our intent in this volume of New Directions for Student Services to encourage examination of the ethical quality of practices in the student services professions, to use professional ethical codes as reference points, to understand how individual codes differ from one another and why those differences may have arisen, to explore the application of ethical principles to ethical decision making, to apply some role definitions and see how their descriptors affect our meeting of ethical resposibilites to one another, and in general, to elevate our inquiry into ethical matters to levels above the minima criteria required by laws and our formal codes. Two critical assumptions apply to the text: First, student services are provided in the context of facilitating the intellectual and personal growth of our student clientele. Second, the maintenence of an ethical climate is a necessary precondition for accomplishment of developmental tasks. This is the 30th issue of New Directions for Student Services.
