Book Overview

Elizabeth Phoenix once used her unique skills as a psychic to help in the Milwaukee Police Department's fight against injustice. But when Liz's foster mother is found viciously murdered--and Liz is discovered unconscious at the scene--her only memory of the crime comes in the form of terrifying dreams...of creatures more horrific than anything Liz has seen in real life. What do these visions mean? And what in the world do they have to do with her...

Wonderful

This book i recieved as an ARC. I was kinda uncertain about it before i opened the pages, let me tell you i couldn't put it down my husband and daughter thought i had gone missing. Needless to say i read it in just two days. I'm eagerly awaiting the second which comes out this April. If your looking for a fantastic beach read this is it.

Lori continues to enthrall.

Lori's Nightcreature Novels are amazing and after reading her prequel short story titled "In the Beginning," I couldn't wait to get my hands on "Any Given Doomsday." She did not disappoint.....I could not put this down and continued on to read the teaser for "Doomsday Can Wait." Something I don't normally do. May is a looong way away... so I pre-ordered the second book because I don't want to forget to keep up with this series!! She has become one of my favorite writers! I love her sense of humor and the way she brings everything together throughout the book.

Lori Handeland weaves an intriguing tale in this book

Elizabeth Phoenix went through the system. There she met Jimmy Sanducci, her first love. But thanks to her psychic powers, she got hurt. After that, she decided to try and use her powers for good by joining the Milwaukee Police Department. After one too many times of having an unusual hunch, her partners got suspicious. She left the force and tried her hand at being a bartender. When she discovers her foster mother's dead body killed by the hands of unknown creatures, the final battle between good and evil is about to begin and Elizabeth finds herself in the center of it. She also rediscovers Jimmy Sanducci and wonders if she can avoid picking up where she left off. However, she is drawn further in to the battle and the web being drawn around her by the forces of evil. She will do what she has to, to protect the world. I always wonder if I will ever tire of the good vs. evil end of the world type books, but with Any Given Doomsday, I can say I have not yet found my limit. Lori Handeland weaves an intriguing tale in this book. I really like Elizabeth as the main character. She is strong and her unique abilities add to the excitement of the plot. This book takes some interesting twists and turns that I would have never expected. The story of Elizabeth and Jimmy appeals to the romantic in me and I kept turning the page to find out what would happen to them. I enjoyed the book overall and found myself engrossed in the story. If you enjoy good vs. evil books, you'll enjoy the compelling tale in Any Given Doomsday. The next book Doomsday Can Wait (The Phoenix Chronicles, Book 2) will not be released until next year, but I have already put it on my must have list. Apocalypse Coming Soon?

Elizabeth Phoenix thought of her psychic gift as more like a curse. She could touch someone and know information she had no desire to know. Liz came from a difficult background. She had no memory of her parents and grew up in the foster care system. She developed a hardness that wouldn't let anyone into her heart until Ruthie opened her home and her heart to Liz and many other throwaway kids. Jimmy was another of Ruthie's foster children. As teens and adults Liz and Jimmy became intimate and lived as lovers until the day of Jimmy's betrayal. After that she was on her own. Says Liz, "On the day my old life died, the air smelled of springtime - budding trees, and just born flowers, fresh grass and hope. I should have known right then that something was coming." And it came. With a sudden awareness of danger, Liz rushes to Ruthie's house arriving only moments before her foster mother dies. Severely wounded Ruthie uses her last breath to give Liz her gift. Jimmy finds Liz and explains that Ruthie had been a seer and leader of a war against monsters of the Apocalypse. It will be Liz's job to expand her powers and lead the demon killer, of which Jimmy is one, to keep the world from Satan's minions. Liz has a lot to learn about fallen angels and their demon offspring. To help her with this is Sawyer, a handsome hunk who's knowledge of the supernatural world is unsurpassed. He drives home some very important lessons. For human life to continue its existence Liz and her supporters must be ready to fight to the death against enemies who never show mercy. The riveting plot and high suspense level leave the reader hungry for more, and a lustful attraction between Liz and Sawyer, not to mention her and Jimmy, adds a lot of spice to the action. The characters are genuine and so is the plot. This is one must read book!

Wild ride!

Elizabeth Phoenix has always thought of her psychic ability as a curse but little did she ever expect the mess it would land her in. The death of her foster mother, Ruthie, has changed everything. Now, Liz finds herself in a world in which monsters are real and no one, not even the man she loves, can be trusted. Will Liz be able to fulfill her destiny? The war has only just begun.... What a wild ride! ANY GIVEN DOOMSDAY is a bit of a departure from Lori Handeland's Nightcreature novels as the plot is definitely pure urban fantasy. And boy, does Ms. Handeland know how to write urban fantasy! I can't rave enough about the world building in ANY GIVEN DOOMSDAY. Lori Handeland crafts a world in which reality and the supernatural collide and the clock is now ticking. The various supernatural entities are fascinating and I can't wait to see what else Lori Handeland has in store for us. Admittedly, I'm a sucker for a book with a good storyline about a prophecy and ANY GIVEN DOOMSDAY more than delivers. Character development is exceptional in ANY GIVEN DOOMSDAY. It's easy to like Liz and her disbelief helps make the overall storyline work with her down-to-earth attitude. She has flaws, just like anyone else, but her willingness to keep trying even when the odds are against her is admirable. In fact, all of the characters in ANY GIVEN DOOMSDAY have their own flaws and idiosyncrasies that make them unique and likable. Jimmy and Sawyer are fascinating heroes, particularly as the story draws to a close and we learn so much more about them. ANY GIVEN DOOMSDAY is an urban fantasy lover's dream! From the very first page, the story takes off at a rapid pace that never lets up. Please, Ms. Handeland, please give us book two soon! Highly recommended! COURTESY OF CK2S KWIPS AND KRITIQUES
