"Anton und Gerda" is Hans Fallada's second book, and it suffered the same fate as his first, "Der junge Goedeschal," at the time. This does not, though, preclude today's readers from learning about the young Fallada in his early work, which is still committed to fading expressionism. Furthermore, "Anton und Gerda" alludes to the "neo-expressionist" poet of "Kleiner Mann, was nun?" in a number of ways.
