Malraux culture- hero supreme, revolutionary, novelist, Resistance hero, art historian here tells us of various journeys and returns, meditates on the state of the world, and the situation of mankind. In China he is particularly perceptive, and in talks with Chou-en-Lai and with Mao we see the shape of the future, as Chou obsesses about American power, and Mao angry at Russia, nonetheless too also points to a dominant Chinese part in the human future. Malraux is a writer of complexity, and it sometimes difficult knowing in exactly which direction his somewhat haughty irony is going. But his knowledge is vast, his experience also, and if he speaks to us with a bit of the Olympian hauture of his patron and friend DeGaulle it is not surprising. He gives us nonetheless a sense of the vast richness of human cultures and the complicated meanderings of life and mind in a world of suffering, of beauty, and of mystery.
